Recently I somehow heard of Sinbad & Sailor. They are a new indie pattern company who have just released their first couple of pdf patterns.
Originally I was intrigued by their take on making shorts! They are made with an articulated pocket using press fasteners! How original is that!?
But then my need to make dresses took over and I first bought the magpie dress! It is a very simple loose fitting dress. Great to throw on and look stylish!
The pattern comes as a pdf, which means a bit of taping and fiddling to get the placement all correct but it has only 4 pieces, front and back and 2 for the neck facing which I interfaced. The instructions are starlight forward as is the dress. Great little in between project with great rewards! (in between because it is so quick).
Being unsure of the loose fit I cut a size 10, which in hind sight should have been a size smaller as it swamped me at first. But I just nipped it in under the arms a little and I think it works now.
Still have to work on my pattern placement. I wanted the flower splash detail towards the side but may have been better to have it on the same side for both pieces.
I like how this dress can be accessorised (is that a word?) to go from day to night. Next I kinda see it in a silky black fabric with dragons on … maybe have gone a little mad. lol
Will I make it again? Certainly! It was so quick and because it is so simple to make I will certainly practice some different seam and finishing techniques on it.
Need to give the Raven shorts a go soon too but got a few other expenses to cover in the meantime!

My goodness! You are prolific at the moment!!
oh thank you! still got the big projects lurking around though.
just trying some smaller easier ones
I’m finishing off the fishing vest and still trying to decide what to make next!
So random about the fishing vest but I love it! Oh make the darling ranges dress!!! I have loved ur incarnations of her patterns so far! and ur fabric choice is lovely!
I think what is slowing me down is (apart from the week from hell) is I know that I need to make a muslin – and that’s no fun! LOL. I’m smaller than the smallest size. Bummer dude.
oh yeah that can be annoying. I know muslin making are useful and good so you dont waste your fabric but sometimes you just want to make, right? maybe throw in a cambie in between.
Cambies cure everything!
They are a great cure and like you said before, the only side effect is a pretty dress!
A new cure has been released! Colette Anise. Just gotta wait for it to arrive in Australia. I’m making two. It’s love.
Oh that means they released the patterns! Gotta race through the interwebs!
Oh, cool! Something new to overspend on- and if you didn’t look so great, I wouldn’t seek out the patterns…enabler!!!
yay! yeah i wish I could remember where I first heard of their patterns. they werent on sale yet when i did and I would love to thank the person. But it is fun to find new things! Keeps it interesting!
I love love love this dress! The flower splatter looks fantastic. It’s great to see a Sinbad & Sailor pattern made up
yay! Have you found others online yet? Would love to see the top and shorts made up too! Thank you the fabric originally made me think of the series dexter as it looked like blood splatter but like the slight oriental ness the flower adds.
love that dress and the fabric you have used (did you print it yourself? so cool!).
i’ll have to check out these patterns – i immediately want to buy anything named after ravens and magpies!
I wonder if that is why I am drawn to the patterns as those are my also along with owls my favorite birds.
Oh no I bought it in the walthamstow market. It was my last buy of the day. Same shop as I got the licorice fabric from. I wish I could print my own fabric, but lacking in skill, talent, time, money and space. lol
ooh..great use of print placement…and cat accessorising
haha thank you! I thought the cat went very well with the outfit!
everything looks great with a cat…
good point! I hadnt thought of that!
Ooh–I am intrigued by those shorts. Must look into that. And I have to say that I kind of like the slightly uneven flowers! Of course, this is coming from someone whose pattern placement is NEVER spot on.
Kim the dress looks amazing! It’s so exciting to see people making up the patterns we’ve created especially as we’re such a small startup. Looking forward to seeing your future makes
Aw thanks for stopping by. Glad you like it. Love the pattern.
can’t wait to try the others as well.
That fabric is incredible! I love this dress, thanks for sharing this pattern I love the magpie dress!
Thank you. Fabric was a bargain at 1,60 pmetre!

Glad to spread the love.

Your dress looks like lots of fun to wear.
