Exploring Jerseys – Dolman Sleeve Top by Cation Designs

When we went to the Walthamstow market, I said to myself that I should explore new fabrics and if I found something I would buy some jersey. Now I did do that and the was a little bit stuck. In case I would hate sewing with stretchy knit fabric I didnt want to spend money on a pattern, … enter Cation Designs Post with a free pattern!

The pattern came with little cat faces to line up once printed … needless to say I was sold! There are also very detailed step by step instructions and colour pictures!

She self drafted and graded the pattern for her project to remake her RTW wardrobe. If you want to join her just click here:

Now I have never sewn with jersey before and could easily make this top! It is a great starter project using this sort of fabric and lends itself to varying degrees of stretchiness.
I did however not go along issue free. When trying to create a stretchy seam using a zig zag stitch I started to have skipped stitches. Trying everything to do with cleaning the bobbing, changing thread, tension etc. I finally had a thought. The fabric was very thin, so maybe a thinner ball point needle? Et voila!

I love this top. There is something about making a simple every day item that I would have bought in the shop before and putting my label on it and to be honest, I made this in 2 hours, I would have spent longer in the shops trying to find a top like it.

  1. Love that fabric! Polka-dots are always a great choice :)
I signed up for the Sewing with Knits class on Craftsy–I, too, am determined to conquer my fear of knits! Does your machine have adjustable presser foot pressure? I’ve heard that it’s kind of necessary when sewing with knits.

  2. I have just been having the same problem with skipped stitches on stretchy fabric. I now know how I might be able to solve the problem – thinner needle will be put to the test tomorrow! Thanks for the post :)
