This post is long overdue in terms of how often I would like to post. Considering I put all my banksia makes in one post though I did not have much more to add this last week.
This weekend my parents visited me and it was a lot of fun to show off my self made clothes and wear them out to dinner as well.
My newest addition to my wardrobe is this dress made from the pattern Style 3759 which Sew Busy Lizzy sent me here. I made it using some sort of suiting imitation in small dogtooth pattern.
It came together quickly enough after a big headache on how to make the flappy side panels. The instructions did not really help me as they just stated to sew it together but not how to. lol.
Talking it through with Twisted Yarns helped and when I looked at it again I had a light bulb moment.
The two buttons came from my mum.
It is a little bit loose even though my seam allowance at the zip was 1.5 inches on both sides and I was really generous with seam allowances throughout. But I actually love the loose but sort of structured look.
When I wear it though I feel a little bit like I jumped out of Sherlock Holmes era. lol
How was everyone’s weekend? I have some serious blog reading catch up to do this coming week!

Really cute dress. It’s got an understated but unique kind of vibe.
Thank you! I wanted something that looked a bit more professional in my wardrobe and hope I achieved that. Still love my bright prints though.
Ehat a subtley fab dress!
Arrgh, sorry about the typo- ‘what’ a subtley fab dress!
Yay thank you!:)
I like the shape of this dress, the fabric pattern is suitable for work
Cheers! I feel like I have made a good choice then!
Oooh–I like!
I haven’t yet tried any vintage patterns. I’m not afraid of them like I used to be (that’s what muslins are for!); I just haven’t found any fabric that wants to become a vintage garment. Someday. . .
Ah yes I know what you mean. I had the fabric before, and then got this pattern and thought they matched. But I would love to make something vintage through and through!
You mean with vintage fabric and everything? That would be pretty fantastic! But would definitely require some hunting. . .
The buttons really make the dress look complete. Is the hem done by machine? It looks a tiny bit as if the fabric twisted?
Yeah I was lazy! I cannot remember the word but I did a small hem and then folded that in on itself again to make a hem without a raw edge as this fabric frayed so much. Maybe Bias tape would have been better as it got a bit bulky and weird. Due to its synthetic content I could not press it very well to recover the shape, but it is a lesson learned.
Great idea about the bias tape, a black bias tape hem would look fab. I always struggle doing nice folded hems, the one on my cambie lining is awful
I love this style. It screams vintage and so it’s really eye-catching and different. I would so make this again, especially now that you’ve nailed the construction.
Thank you! I just need to find the right fabric. I think it has a lot of creative potential to add piping and pockets and to have fun with the buttons! Maybe some fabric will inspire me soon.
Love it! So pleased I sent it to a good home. Random act of kindness = sewing win!
How about a nice dark linen with a very subtle contrast top stitch along the panels? Would look very stylish
Great job !
ooo great idea!
i may well do that!
pay day is on friday! wooo!
That’s awesome, my dear Watson! This looks like a dapper work outfit and I love it!
hehehe this made me giggle! thank you!
Well done. I like it all. The pattern, the fabric and how it fits you. Bet you’ll wear it to death.
That came out so wonderfully! You look absolutely amazing in it too!
thank you! you are too kind!
Ooh how exciting!! Did you have to do any pattern adjustments? How did you find the instructions besides the one part ‘sew it together’? LOL. I’m about to embark on my first vintage pattern make and I must say, I’m quite nervous! I’m gonna have to do some pretty major ajdustments though so I think that’s why I’m in a tizzy LOL.
oh i didnt really make any adjustments. the fabric wasnt that expensive so I just went for it.
I knew it would be a little big in places so just increased the seam allowances which doesnt always work but was okish here.
I think in an indie pattern or event a big four pattern this dress would have had like at least 20 steps but it was all on one page in like 5. lol. So that is what confused me a little. the guidance wasnt really there but with common sense you easily get through it.
the part that made me laugh was for the sleevelss version. it said something like “make like view A, no sleeves”. Which is true and fine but it did not tell you how to finish the sleeve holes instead. it is very fun though and it is fun to think that women years ago just made dresses like that without thinking about it.
That is cool isn’t it? Depending on what company the pattern was from, they may have had books/magazines published too, which may have taught using more thorough instructions
It looks great. Really flattering too. Good job.
