Deer and Doe – Robe Sureau first try – The Joker?

Sureau Sew-along
“You look like the Joker!”
These were the words from my boyfriend’s mouth when I tried on my finished Robe Sureau wearable muslin. Now you have to understand that this is not a bad thing coming from him, as his favourite superhero and villain pairing is Batman and the Joker. Still, not quite what I hoped to hear.
Overall I like this dress, there are just a couple of things off. Fitting wise the bodice needs to be around 1.5 inches longer.
And I think that will solve my main issue with this dress. But somehow I do not think the arms work for me. I feel a bit mousey in this dress.
I was a bit stumped on how to add pockets to this. I tried the same method as for Tilly’s Picnic skirt but then on one side seam there is the zipper … hmm.
Also gathered skirts do not really work on my I feel, hence I will probably do some sort of frankenpatterning next, maybe with my favourite Cambie skirt as I did for my LBD Macaron! :P
Construction wise the pattern came together super quick. Even without knowing French you can work the construction out if you have made a dress before.
There are some great version popping up all over the internet with the sewalong so cannot wait to see more! Hope someone does a sewalong for their coat too! *hint hint at all the french speakers* :D
I am not quite decided what sort of version to make next. I have some stripey material, lovely grey cotton but not enough I fear. Will have to have a look through the stash!

  1. Cute! I love that color :)
I found adding pockets with a side zipper to be both really simple and a bit tricky. But I feel that this dress kinda needs pockets, you know? It’s just one of those dresses.

  2. I like wearable muslins and the colour of this one is lovely on you. If you lengthen the bodice & straighten the skirt maybe the sleeves won’t make you feel so mousey? Just a thought.

    • hahaha that made me giggle! :P Thank you *blush* Looking at the pictures I think i like it more than when just looking in the mirror. sometimes once own eyes are a bit deceiving. :)

  3. I live that cour on you! So dramatic! I have made a sleeveless version because I was not loving the sleeves for summertime and it feels quite sassy! Mayhaps that may help de-mouse it?

    • yeah, when i tried it on without the sleeves i really liked it but we have winter soonish so thought sleeves are needed. Maybe i will just add one of those button bands like some people have to add another dimension to the sleeve

  4. I like the bold colour! I’m adding pockets to mine too – using the instructions from the simplicity/cynthia rowley 2215 pattern that I have. It’s the first time I’m doing pockets (and I did manage to sew them shut on the first attempt at the muslin!) so hopefully it’ll go ok for the real dress…I’m planning to start on that this weekend. Ps “winter soonish”?? – I’m already using a hot water bottle I’m so cold!!!!

    • awww! yeah today was really cold here. I think i am in denial! i do not want winter! :P However I am knitting now so it is getting colder! :P
cant wait to see your version! I sewed my first pockets shut! i just couldnt understand what was going on. lol. sometimes i cannot see the wood for all the trees … that is a literal german saying, hope it works! :P

  5. I think it’s super cute…I’ve been wanting to try that pattern. Sleeves are easy to shorten or take off completely. You could also put an elastic or small binding around the sleeve hem for a cute look. Your boyfriend’s comment reminded me of just this morning when I pinned on my BurdaStyle skirt to see how it would fit and just LOVED it! I showed it to my hubby and he said “Hm, that’s nice”. Again, not bad but not the “WOW! That’s amazing!” I was hoping for. Haha…that’s guys for you :)

    • hehe thanks for the tips! yeah he says he likes what i make but sometimes comes out with odd things. lol.
yeah i may also try setting other sleeves like from the macaron as i like that length. :)
