Finished: Sparkly Veste Pavot

I have finished it! My Sewlution and first ever coat! I wore it out around London today, as we actually had sun! This meant I did not need my winter coat and accessorized with wooly hat and scarf could stay warm in the unlined Sparkly Pavot.

Me: Am I all sparkly?
R: Yes, like Edward …

To make this coat I used the Deer&Doe pattern called Pavot and the coating fabric I bought at craft fair on the weekend.

I was naughty and did not make a muslin for this make, but did make a couple adjustments based on the flat pattern measurements. First of all I cut a size bigger than my measurements because I want to be able to wear layers with this coat and generally when I buy RTW jackets and coats wear a size bigger.

Then I lengthened the relevant bodice pieces by 5 cms. This seemed to be perfect when I tried on just the bodice but once the skirt part was attached the weight pulled the waist down, making it look like a dropped waist now. This is the main issue I had with the finished fit, which is totally my fault and not the pattern.

I also knew I wanted the coat to be long on me, like knee length. This meant adding serious inches to the skirt pieces but I did not write down how many …

The pattern itself is well drafted and the sewing was relatively quick. I loved doing the top stitching along the seams. This also made the insides even neater as the coat does not have a lining.

I did not feel confident to draft my own lining, so I took the pattern’s advice and finished all my pattern piece with zigzag stitches before assembling them. This was a bit of a drag to be honest but makes the construction a lot quicker later on. In total I sewed for 5 hours excluding finished the pieces beforehand.

Then I tried to do the buttonholes and it went all wrong. My machine just did not want to make them. It completely stopped after 2, so I tried to hand sew the other 3 buttonholes. The outcome is acceptable but not as nice as it could be I think.

The buttons I used also came from the craft fair that I got the fabric at and are handmade pottery type buttons. I thought they added a nice touch of colour. :)

Finally the facing are just badly catch stitched in. Badly because I forgot how to do it. lol.Oh and I added some spotty tape at the hem.

I see myself making another pavot in the near future. I like the idea of the short version maybe in a lightweight denim.

Overall I think my first coat attempt was a success and I cannot wait to try out more coat and jacket patterns this year!

Expenses:
Pattern: 12.80 EUR so 9pounds?
Fabric: £4.50 per metre, used 2.5, so £11.25
Notions: buttons – £3.50
Total: £23.75 – my last RTW coat cost 60 so I am super happy with this)

  1. Yay! My brooch! I love the coat and can’t wait to see the sparkle up close. The spotty hemming adds a cute little touch. Overall really suits you and looks well made! :-)

    • aww thank you! :) and thanks for the brooch! goes really well doesnt it!? :P I enjoyed wearing it today although for our usual weather it is still a little bit cold. Thank you! :D

    • thank you! glad to give you the motivation! it is not half as scary or difficult as I thought. Although this one is not lined or interlined. Those steps I want to learn next. :P
